Back-order

An ordered item a supplier cannot deliver yet, promised for a later date.

Why it matters operationally

Back-orders are tolerable in a business with a next quarter and dangerous for an event with a fixed date. The useful question is never whether something is back-ordered but whether the promised date is before the day it is needed — and that comparison is only possible if the need has a date attached to it in the first place.
