Asset tag

A unique identifier attached to an individual item so it can be tracked as itself rather than as a quantity.

Why it matters operationally

Consumables are counted; assets are tracked. Tagging is what allows a specific radio, cabin or vehicle to be located, returned to the right hire company, and reconciled at closeout. Tagging everything is waste; tagging nothing is how hire equipment is paid for twice.
